Diseases of the thyroid gland
Diseases of the thyroid gland are detected accurately at the Diagnoseklinik with modern radiologic diagnostic tools as well as detailed laboratory diagnostic techniques.
Goitre
This disease is very widespread. About 90,000 goitre operations are performed each year in Germany: they could be avoided with timely recognition and therapy. A goitre is generated by iodine defficiency. The thyroid tissue grows in size. It can be easily diagnosed by ultrasound examination and laboratory work.
Thyroid function abnormalities: an over- or underfunction of the thyroid gland. There are different forms of thyroid overfunction – the autoimmune disease Basedow, the so-called hot nodule that produces large quantities of hormones, or the general (diffuse) overfunction. An underfunction develops due to severe iodine deficiency or an impairment of hormone production due, for example, to chronic inflammation or tumours. Examination method: ultrasound and extensive laboratory testing, as well as scintigraphy.
Thyroid inflammation, thyroid cancer: Inflammations of the thyroid gland can be triggered by bacteria, viruses or autoimmune diseases. Malignant diseases of the thyroid gland are relatively rare. There are different types of cancers, some of which are determined by heredity. Both tumours and inflammations are diagnosed with the methods mentioned above. Computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging produce accurate diagnoses too.
