Our view inside the lungs

It is primarily smokers who have problems with their lungs and bronchi. Tobacco smoke damages the delicate tissue of the bronchi, diminishes the respiratory function and promotes the development of bronchitis. Cancer-causing substances in tar can produce cancer. Approximately 90% of all cases of lung and bronchial cancer are caused by the consumption of cigarettes.

Bronchitis

In bronchitis, an inflammation of the respiratory passages, the cilia of the respiratory passages are initially paralysed. Also, the lung produces mucus in excess. Later the cilia are destroyed and the mucous membrane of the small alveolae disappears. The consequence: during exhalation the alveolae become unstable and collapse. The bronchial mucous membrane becomes increasingly thick and ultimately narrows the respiratory passages. Later on, the small alveoli are also destroyed – the lung looks more and more like a large baloon. The medical diagnosis is emphysema. Symptoms are shortness of breath and weakness.

Lung cancer

Lung cancer develops mostly between the ages of 55 and 60 years. Only 5% of those affected are below 40. Unfortunately, no symptoms occur in the early stage. Cough is an important sign, however it can be a symptom for other diseases. Coughing up blood occurs in the late stage of lung cancer. Other symptoms can be:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Shortness of breath or fever

But bronchitis and lung cancer are not the only diseases of the lung and bronchi. Asthma, tuberculosis and pneumonia are other examples. In the Diagnoseklinik we detect even the smallest changes in the lung and bronchial system and make a reliable diagnosis.
