When the stomach hurts…

This is stomach-churning” – a sentence that everyone has heard or said in life. Diarhoea, constipation – these and other complaints and diseases of the digestive system are known to everyone.

Functional stomach complaints

Functional stomach complaints  - from heartburn to vomiting - are frequently caused by stress and hustle–and-bustle. A healthy change in lifestyle is of benefit. In many cases herbal preparations help. An acute  gastritis (inflammation of the stomach mucosa) is also easy to treat. In most cases the cause is uncontrolled nutrition – too fatty, too sweet.  In other cases the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is to blame. In those cases antibiotics help. The complaints are the same: sudden, severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, sensation of fullness, generalised weakness, loss of appetite, headache, covered tongue, and mouth odour.

Chronic gastritis

In most cases patients with chronic gastritis do not have any complaints. If complaints occur, they are in most cases after meals: stomach pain, pressure sensation, fullness sensation, nausea and belching are typical. The causes are difficult to find. The bacterium Helicobacter pylori is responsible in 90% of all inflammations of the stomach mucosa.

Stomach ulcer

An ulcer in the digestive system is a disease of the mucosa. This penetrates into deeper layers. It is called erosion when it is limited to the surface of the mucosa. Stomach ulcers commonly cannot be differentiated from duodenal ulcers on the basis of the symptoms. The following symptoms occur: pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, sensation of fullness, weight loss and bleeding. Here too, the most common cause is an infection with the bacterium helicobacter pylori.

Stomach cancer, colon cancer

Stomach cancer doesn`t cause any symptoms in the early stage and is discovered accidentally in most cases. An unusual aversion to meat can be an indication. Colon cancer is also commonly discovered very late. Diarhoea or constipation can be suggestive here. Intestinal complaints can have many causes – irritable bowel, bowel polyps, bowel infection, bowel obstruction, worm disease, colon cancer. At the Diagnoseklinik we track down the cause.
